The Ask is an organisation set up by Mayor Prentiss to counter the Answer, the rebel group that seeks to overthrow the Mayor/President. It debuted in The Ask and the Answer.

The Ask uses a special technique of interrogation called "Asking'", which is performed in the Arena of the Ask. The interrogator ties the captives to a chair, then beats them, both mentally and physically. When Todd is interrogated, the interrogator used stress positions, mainly Viola, who turns out to be Todd's weak point.
The Ask is brutal in its practices, horrifying many, including Todd, Viola, the Spackle (Spacks for short), and common members of society.
Trivia[]
- The organization was created when the Mayor says if there is an Answer, you have to Ask first. This happened after the Answer bombed a building in New Prentisstown.
- The symbol of the Ask is a silver 'A', countering the Answer's pale blue 'A'.
