Manchee is Todd Hewitt's loyal dog who only appears in The Knife Of Never Letting Go.

Like all other animals, Manchee can speak through Noise, as well as through his mouth, given to the animals by germ from the Spackle.

History[]

Chaos Walking trilogy[]

The Knife of Never Letting Go[]

Todd got Manchee for his twelfth birthday, although he didn't want a dog. He originally thought of Manchee as pretty awful, but their bond grew as they travelled together to Haven to escape Prentisstown and David's army multiple times throughout the journey to Haven. He was killed by Aaron snapping his neck when they were attempting to rescue Viola. Todd cannot stop thinking of Manchee for days after he dies, and feels responsible for leaving Manchee behind to be murdered by Aaron.

Monsters of Men[]

Manchee is mentioned by Todd when he refuses to leave Angharrad behind on the battlefield.

Chaos Walking (film)[]

Manchee is first seen walking with Todd in the New World forest. He constantly follows Todd wherever Todd goes. Later, while escaping Farbranch, Todd witnesses Manchee being drowned by Aaron.

Trivia[]

  • It is not said what breed he is, but the fan community thinks of him as a terrier, often a Border Terrier.
  • In one of the episodes of the podcast We Talk Books (podcast can be found on Spotify), one of the hosts originally thought that Manchee was a Boxer. She later realized that it would be impossible for Manchee to be a Boxer as Todd and Viola both took turns carrying the dog after he was wounded in Farbranch by Matthew.
  • Manchee's first line in the series is: "Need a poo, Todd".
  • Manchee is portrayed by Lamborghini, a female Border Terrier, in the film. As a result, the film portrayal of Manchee has no Noise, even though Manchee is referred to as male throughout the film.
  • In the books, Manchee is killed by Aaron snapping his neck; in the film, Aaron drowns Manchee in a river. It is unknown why Manchee's cause of death changed, but perhaps it was done so audiences would feel that drowing would be more "humane" way of killing him.
